I will do my best to update the website by 5:00 p.m. each Friday. The website will also keep you updated to the happenings of our class.

Scholastic Book Orders
I will be sending home book orders throughout the school year, about one each month. This is a great and inexpensive way to build your child’s reading library. You may order as many or as few books as you would like. When you order it helps our class receive free books for our library.

Attendance
School begins at 8:00 a.m. and the day ends at 3:15 p.m. Regular attendance is extremely important for your students success. When students miss school days they are missing valuable instruction, discussion, experiences and interactions that can not be “made-up”. If for any reason your child does have to miss school please refer to the student handbook for details about the attendance policy.

Tardiness
Students arriving after 8:00 a.m. will be marked as tardy. You may drop off your child as early as 7:30 a.m. Six tardy marks in a quarter is equal to one absence. Arriving on time is a good way to teach your child about responsibility and accountability. This is a good practice so let’s start now. (More details are provided in the student handbook)

Folder
Each child will have a folder with his or her name on it. This folder will be used for multiple things. It will be used for sending work home to be completed and returning finished work. Permission slips and Scholastic Book Club order forms will be sent home in it and should also be returned in this manner. You may also send any kind of correspondence and absentee notes this way. Essentially the folder will be a ‘mailbox’ between the parent and the teacher and also a way to keep everything organized.
It is up to you, the parent, and the student to make sure his/her folder is emptied out in the evening, the appropriate papers returned and that it is in the homework bin every morning. I will remind the students for the first few weeks or so of school until we have settled into our routine. After that it will be the student’s responsibility to get their folders out of their bags and into the proper bin.

Classroom Rulers and Procedures
At Daarul Uloom School learning is our priority. We have five classroom rules in order to stay on task and keep learning.
Rule One : Listen to the speaker.
Rule Two : Raise your hand to speak or leave your seat.
Rule Three : Always be honest
Rule Four : Be a caring friend
Rule Five : Always try your best
We will use a clip chart system to track behavior. Please read below to see what each level means.
Pink: The top level. The student made excellent choices throughout the day. This level is difficult to achieve. When a student reaches the pink level, they receive a small reward and a cheer from the class.
Purple: This level is reached when a student has made several good choices throughout the day.
Blue: When a child has made one/some good choices, they get to clip up to the blue level.
Green: Everyone starts the day on green every day. Most days children will be on green the entire day. Please note that being on green is not a negative thing.
Yellow: This level is reached when a child makes a bad choice. I will give him/her a warning first and then if the student continues to make poor choices, he/she clips down to this level. This is a warning only.
Orange: If bad choices continue to be made, the child clips down to orange and will have a consequence. This can mean less recess time, missing a fun activity, changing seats etc.
Red: If a child continues to make bad choices, he/she will clip down to red. This means that I will be calling home or sending a note home to let you know that the child reached the red level. If something serious happens, he/she will be referred to the office.

Homework
Homework isn't meant to be lengthy but meant to help reinforce the concepts that are being taught in the classroom. Worksheets that coincide with what is being taught will be sent home as homework and shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes. Each child will have a folder with his/her name on it that will contain their homework assignments. You will also find a homework log listing the weekly assignments and any tests that may be scheduled. The weekly spelling words can also be found on the homework log. Homework will be sent daily and will be collected the following day. Homework should be returned in the child’s homework folder. In general assigned homework will not be given over the weekend.
Reading
It is crucial to allow your child to practice reading every single day. I can not stress this enough. To build upon our practice in the classroom students will be given reading logs which I will collect once a month to help keep track of their progress.
Writing and Spelling
Students will be writing various sentences and such throughout the school year. In the beginning students will mostly be spelling phonetically – “sounding out” words, except of course spelling words, which students will learn how to spell correctly. Parents should monitor writing but should interfere as little as possible. It is perfectly acceptable and DESIRED that the student be allowed to try to spell words on their own – phonetically – they will be putting to use the knowledge that they have gained thus far – letter sounds, and discovering what happens when they put one sound with another. As we progress through the year the students spelling and handwriting should both notably improve.
